Dee groaned as he regained consciousness, head throbbing, pillowed on something firm but still softer than the cold, hard concrete beneath him.

“Finally. I was beginning to worry.”

Ryo’s voice, coming from above him, Ryo’s hand resting on his chest over his heart, which meant it was probably Ryo’s lap beneath his head. Dee dragged his recent memories into some semblance of order, found a gap there, probed at it, fruitlessly trying to discover what was gone.

“What happened?” He sounded as muzzy and vague as he felt.

“It was a setup, although what they think they’ll gain by abducting two NYPD detectives I have no idea. Guess we should just be grateful they wanted us alive. How d’you feel?”

“Like there’s a marchin’ band in my head usin’ my brain as the bass drum.” Dee shifted, trying to sit up, and Ryo helped him, propping him against the cold cellar wall. “Think I’ll live.” He squinted at his partner in the dimness. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but considerin’ we just got clobbered, you’re lookin’ a whole lot better than I feel.”

“Our attackers got you first, giving me just enough warning that I was already falling when they hit me; wasn’t much more than a glancing blow. Still enough to knock me out for a bit though. Trouble is, I was still out when they dumped us in here so I don’t know where we are, and they took our phones as well as our guns, so we can’t call for help.”

“Okay, that was the bad news. Is there any good news?”

“They didn’t tie us up?”

“Good enough. So what next?”

“We should probably try to escape, if you feel up to it.”

Dee snorted then winced. “Babe, doesn’t matter whether I feel up to it or not, we’ve still gotta escape so we might as well start tryin’. Don’t suppose you happen to have any painkillers on ya.”

“No, sorry. I’ve got some in my desk at the precinct.”

“Not much use to us there. Y’know, if people are gonna make a habit of bashin’ us over the head we should maybe start carryin’ ‘em with us.”

“Right now a weapon might be of more use.”

Fumbling at his ankle, Dee bit back a moan as the movement sent spikes of pain through his head. Nevertheless…

“Didn’t do a very good job of searchin’ us.” He pulled a small pistol from an ankle holster. “Here, you take it, you’re a better shot, and anyway, doubt I can shoot straight.”

“Since when did you start carrying a backup?”

Dee didn’t answer, too busy trying to stand up. Once again, Ryo helped him.

“Whaddaya say we make like Butch and Sundance and blow this joint?”

“Butch and Sundance died,” Ryo reminded him.

“Right. Let’s not do that. Is there a back way outta here?”

“There’s a window if we can reach it.”

“That’ll do.”

They were halfway back to the precinct before anyone knew they’d gone.
