Mother set down her teacup and sighed. “I just don’t know what to do with him, Jess, I really don’t. He’s such a little tearaway. I love him as though he was my own flesh and blood, but he’s forever getting himself into mischief of one kind or another, and now this!”

Jess chuckled. “Dee’s only seven, Mother, just a boy, and boys get themselves into all kinds of scrapes. I should know.”

“That’s just my point though. If he’s already like this at seven, what will he be like when he’s older?”

“He’s a good boy, and you’re doing a fine job of raising him; he’s never done any serious harm to anyone. Believe me, I was far worse than Dee when I was his age, and I turned out okay, didn’t I?”

That drew a smile from Mother; Jess was a police detective, dedicated to law and order. Her young charge, however, seemed to be the total opposite, dedicated to causing as much chaos as he could manage.

It wasn’t just his occasional shoplifting escapades these days either. She’d told Dee over and over that stealing candy bars from the local corner store was wrong, that stealing anything was wrong, but her words seemed to go in one ear and out the other, accompanied by a look of wide-eyed innocence and any number of excuses. “But I was hungry, Mother!” “But there were so many, I didn’t think anybody would miss just one!” “Bobby dared me to!” Dee didn’t just have nimble fingers; he had an agile mind as well.

“But the hubcaps…” How Dee had managed to steal so many in one weekend, ‘hiding’ them all under his bed, she had no idea, and what had he said when she’d found them?

“Eric collects stamps, and Ricky collects baseball cards. I didn’t think you’d mind if I collected something too. I like them, they’re shiny.”

“It was a harmless prank, and he did give them back when you caught him,” Jess reminded Mother.

“He shouldn’t have taken them in the first place. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve told him it’s wrong to take things that don’t belong to him. You know what he said the first time I gave him that lecture? ‘If I take something, it belongs to me. How can it be stealing once it’s mine?’ He has an answer for everything.”

“And what did you say to that?”

“I told him it’s not his until he pays for it. He wasn’t happy about that.”

“I can imagine. So what’s he in trouble for this time? More hubcaps?”

“No, this time it’s much worse. He got hold of some balloons somewhere and made water bombs.”

“Boys do that all the time.”

“Yes, but Dee didn’t fill them with tap water, he used the muddy water from the building site on the next block, and now Father McCafferty can’t get the stains out of his robes.”

That was one prank nobody would forget!
