The alleyways in this part of New York were a maze, the buildings they ran between like tall, impassable hedges. Walls randomly blocked some of the narrow passages, while piles of garbage, rubble, and broken furniture turned others into obstacle courses. Running a suspect to ground in a place like this was damn near impossible, especially if they knew their way around better than the cops did. There were so many places to hide.
“Did ya see which way the sonofabitch went?” Dee asked, skidding to a halt beside Drake, who shook his head.
“He didn’t come this way.”
“Dammit!” Dee turned back the way he’d come.
“Canine unit’s on the way,” Ted reported through Dee’s earpiece. “Once they get here they’ll soon flush Junior out.”
“Don’t count in it,” Dee muttered. “That bastard knows these alleys like the back of his hand. Probably has a dozen escape routes planned; he’ll be on his way to the state line by now and out of the NYPD’s jurisdiction.”
Junior Heggarty was a nasty piece of work with ties to the IRA and several other terrorist groups. He supplied weapons, mostly handguns, pipe bombs, and incendiary devices, and this time he’d been caught on camera planting a bomb in a senator’s car. Half the cops in the city were out looking for him; Dee and his team had almost captured him but he’d given them the slip, scrambling through a hole in a fence. The little weasel was fast on his feet.
Moving slowly, Dee picked up a rusted length of metal pipe, using it to poke through piles of garbage. They’d been so close to getting the scumbag off the streets, only to lose him. It was maddening!
Another voice suddenly came through Dee’s earpiece. “Dee! I see him!” Ryo had gone up on the roof of one of the tenements, hoping to get a better view.
“Guide me!”
“Take the next alley on your left.”
Junior might know his way around this rundown area but that wouldn’t help him this time. The cops of the Two-Seven were gonna get their man if they had to search all night.
By the time the canine unit finally arrived the chase was over; Junior Heggarty, bruised and bloody from resisting arrest, was in cuffs, Dee and Ryo marching him back to the squad cars.
Dee grinned at his partner. “We’re one helluva team!”
