Katie meant everything to Owen, she was his whole world, so when she’d begun having issues with her memory he’d been determined to stand by her and get her whatever help and treatment she needed. The diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s had been totally unexpected, but still he hadn’t given up. She’d just deteriorated so quickly and when another scan had revealed a growth in her brain, he’d hoped that surgery would be the answer.
Instead, the ‘tumour’ had turned out to be a gestating alien; Katie and the whole surgical team had died during the operation meant to remove it, and all Owen could think was that he’d failed the woman he loved. There should have been something he could have done that might have saved her. He would have done anything!
Ianto had tried to save his girlfriend, hiding her away and searching for someone who could restore her to the woman she’d been before, and Owen knew he’d have done the same in Ianto’s place. Yes, he’d been misguided, and yes, it had all gone wrong, but he’d tried.
“Wasn’t your fault,” he said gruffly.
“I failed her.”
“Sometimes no matter what you do you can’t win.”
