Sent undercover to investigate a suspected cult, Ryo was seriously wondering what he was even doing here. If this group of people were cultists then he was chief of police.
“People think we’re weird, can you believe that?” Jackie, one of the older women said as she and Ryo worked together painting a bedroom wall. “Some of the people on the street are trying to have us evicted, all because of the way we’ve chosen to live our lives.”
“Why would they do that?” Ryo was genuinely mystified.
“Oh, they claim we’re a cult, that we’re poisoning the minds of impressionable youngsters, when really we’re just a bunch of people who’ve grown tired of the rat race and wanted a simpler life. We’re doing up this old tenement we bought, and we hope to grow a lot of our own food once we get the yard sorted out; what’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing at all. Homegrown fruit and vegetables taste so much better than what the supermarkets sell. My parents used to have a vegetable patch, dad grew practically every kind of veg you can imagine and I remember mom sending me out to fetch tomatoes off the vine, or pull carrots for dinner.” Ryo smiled at the memory.
“Exactly! Wanting to provide for ourselves doesn’t make us a cult! Heck, we’re not even particularly religious, or perhaps I should say we represent several religions. It’s not like we’re worshiping Satan, or brainwashing people to join us. The young people here are our own sons and daughters, and nobody’s forcing them to stay against their will. They come and go as they please; some live here with us and some don’t, but they’re all happy to help out. We’re building our homes.”
Ryo almost wished he could live there himself.
