Dee doesn’t attend church much anymore. Growing up in a Catholic orphanage it had been mandatory to attend mass every Sunday, and he’d seldom complained, although he’d napped through the sermon as often as not. But after he’d entered the police academy, there’d been so much work to do, and so little free time, that he’d resented having to spend Sunday mornings sitting on a hard church pew when he could be sleeping off a hangover, or hanging out with friends.

Now he’s a cop, practically the only time he goes to church is Christmas unless, like today, something happens that makes him feel in need of its peace and soothing familiarity.

Sinking into a pew, he bows his head, praying for the life of a small girl whose parents are presumed dead, and who’d survived only because she’d hidden from ‘the Boogeyman’.

He doesn’t know what happened in that house, nobody does, but Dee can’t shake the belief that whatever took the girl’s parents wasn’t human. So he prays for the child’s safety, and her sanity. It’s all he can do.

Feeling guilty, he prays for himself too, that whatever monster is out there will never come for him.
