“What’s this?” Gwen asked, picking up the curious gadget from Ianto’s desk in the archives and studying it. She’d only been with Torchwood a couple of weeks and she’d been so busy with training this was the first chance she’d had to look around by herself. She hadn’t been shown the archives when Jack had given her the tour after she’d conned her way into the underground base.
“Do you routinely pick up things you don’t recognise with your bare hands?” Ianto asked, striding across the small office area and taking the device from her. “If so, that needs to stop. Alien devices can be unpredictable and their effects… Let’s just say once you’ve seen a colleague turned inside out right before your eyes, it stays with you.”
Gwen looked horrified. “That could really happen?”
“I was there. He didn’t survive. That’s why there are safety protocols we all have to follow when handling anything unknown. Rule one is, we don’t touch anything of alien origin with our bare hands unless it’s been thoroughly examined and identified as harmless.”
“Oh. So what does that do?” Gwen gestured at the gadget in Ianto’s hands.
Ianto smiled thinly. “It’s my coffee grinder.”
