The first ten years of Bikky’s life had been rough. It had been hard enough being a mixed race kid, with a black mother and a white father; cursed to have his dad’s blond hair and blue eyes, along with skin the colour of good coffee, he’d been picked on and bullied by the other kids until he’d gotten big enough to defend himself. That hadn’t stopped the teasing and taunting, but after he beat up one of the bigger, older kids who picked on him the bullying at least had stopped.
Bikky’s mom had died when he was five, hit by a car on her way to collect him from school. After that his dad, already a petty criminal, had gotten involved in drug trafficking, among other things, in an effort to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Bikky had started skipping school a lot, and had followed in his father’s footsteps by shoplifting and picking pockets, trying to help pay the bills.
Then his dad was killed, gunned down, and just like that Bikky was an orphan.
Things could have gone downhill from there, leaving Bikky dead or in Juvie by his mid-teens, but the second decade of his life couldn’t have been more different from the first.
Taken in by one of the cops investigating his dad’s murder, Bikky had to get used to a whole new way of life. No stealing and no skipping school, instead doing his homework every night and eating his veggies. His grades improved, he qualified for the school basketball team, and in time not only graduated but earned a full scholarship to play basketball at an L.A. college.
Sometimes he still had to pinch himself to see if it was real. Dreams really could be fulfilled.
