Another murder scene, blood and gore splattered everywhere; what made some people such monsters they could carry out such brutal attacks on people they most likely knew? Dee could understand killing in self-defence, or in defence of someone else. He could even, to an extent, understand crimes of passion, or a loss of control under extreme circumstances, someone snapping after years of abuse.

This was different though; this was the brutal but methodical work of a serial killer. Three victims now, each one brutalised so badly as to be unidentifiable.

Gazing at the body, Dee couldn’t help wondering if this poor girl’s spirit, ripped so brutally from her body, would linger here, haunting the place where she’d breathed her last. Was this how all hauntings began, with a violent death, a confused spirit, and a desperate need for justice?

It was an awful place to die; a damp, stinking basement room. Her body might not even have been found if a homeless man hadn’t been looking for someplace dry to sleep. He’d found more than he’d bargained for, but at least he’d done the decent thing and called the police.

So here they were, with another unknown female victim. If she’d been carrying identification the killer must have disposed of it elsewhere. The only person that knew who she’d been was the victim herself, and she wasn’t talking. Not yet anyway.

Ryo might not believe in ghosts, but Dee did.

“We’ll find who killed you,” he whispered fiercely. “No matter how long it takes we’ll find him and we’ll make sure he pays for what he’s done to you and the others, that’s a promise. We’ll get justice for you; then maybe you can rest in peace.”

She’d been let down in life, but he wouldn’t fail her in death.

The End
