People tended to look at Dee with pity when they learned he’d grown up in an orphanage. They’d say things like, “That must have been so awful for you. No home, no family…”

He’d listen to their sympathetic words and shake his head; they didn’t understand.

It wasn’t as if Dee had ever known what it was like to have what everyone else seemed to consider a normal childhood. Abandoned at birth, the orphanage had been his only home, Mother and Jess the only parents he’d needed, patient, loving and steadfast, and the other orphans like his siblings. As far as he could see, he hadn’t missed out on anything.

There’d been gifts on birthdays and Christmas, birthday parties with candles and a cake, help with homework, kisses to skinned knees, hugs when he was sad, punishment when he was naughty, and unstinting praise when he did well on school tests and exams. There’d even been outings to the park, and the zoo, and the cinema, thanks to Jess.

So he hadn’t had a traditional upbringing, so what? He’d grown up in a place filled with love, had never gone hungry, or been cold or alone at night, had always had clothes and shoes to wear even if most had been hand-me-downs… There were kids who had the regular type of home and family who’d grown up with less, always cold and malnourished because their parents didn’t have the money for food or heat, some without a roof over their heads at all. Others were neglected, beaten and abused, as he never had been.

No, growing up in an orphanage hadn’t been the terrible childhood most people assumed it must have been; he hadn’t wanted for anything that mattered. He had so many happy memories of his early life; he could honestly say he wouldn’t change any of it, even if he could. Mother and the kids would always be his family, and he blessed the day Jess had found him and taken him to her. He only wished all kids could have childhoods as wonderful as his had been.

The End
