This was the last thing Dee had expected to find in the middle of New York. Thanksgiving was still weeks away, and yet there it was, strutting about if the front yard of an otherwise fairly ordinary suburban house, the biggest turkey he’d ever seen outside the poultry section of the supermarket.
He stopped, halfway up the path, not quite sure how to handle the situation. Dogs were bad enough, but turkeys were an unknown quantity. He didn’t remember ever encountering a live one before.
Dee took a tentative step forwards. “Don’t mind me, I just need to have a word with your… uh… owner.”
On second thoughts, maybe speaking to the turkey had been a bad move because suddenly he had its full attention. It gobbled at him, crimson wattles swinging with every jerk of its head.
“Nice turkey.” Dee took another step forwards, trying to remain calm and not appear threatening, but he must have failed somehow because the next thing he knew the turkey was barrelling towards him, its wings flapping wildly.
Not bothering to wait and see what it would do, Dee turned and fled, hurdling the gate as if it wasn’t even there. He was back in his car with the doors locked almost before he realised he’d moved. The turkey had got no further than the gate, but Dee could see it, head thrust between the bars, glaring malevolently at him.
“Now what do I do?” he muttered, then shrugged; when in doubt, call Ryo.
“Dee, hey, did you talk to Banks?”
“Um, no, not yet. Ran into a problem.”
“What kind of problem?”
“I can’t get near the house; guy’s got a guard turkey. It chased me outta the yard.”
“Did you say turkey?”
“Yep. I’m thinkin’ someone else can interview this guy.”
