Dee shook out his shirt, studied it, and gave a resigned shrug. “Police work can be hell on the wardrobe. Good thing I wasn’t particularly attached to that one; the only thing it’s good for now is rags.”
Ryo could sympathise; several of his shirts had wound up in the ragbag too. You didn’t have to get shot or stabbed for clothes to be ruined; sometimes all it took was chasing a suspect, or having some guy resist arrest.
“They don’t make shirts like they used to.” Dee stuck his hand through the ragged hole where the sleeve had been torn half off.
“They do,” Ryo corrected him. “They just cost more than we can afford on our salary, and anyway it wouldn’t be worth spending that kind of money on something that could get ripped on a rusty fire escape, stained with someone else’s blood, or soaked in oil or spaghetti sauce.” It had been that kind of week. “Better to get work shirts in bulk from the discount clothing outlet. Works out much cheaper that way.”
“And people wonder why most cops don’t dress stylishly.” Dee said with a wry smile. “I don’t know how JJ does it.”
