So I have this completely angst owie Merthur to post in a few and I'm WONDERING where people are reading nowadays? When I started out way way in the long ago of that vampire fandom of which i shall no longer speak - it was all Fanfiction.net and now... well it kind of seems pointless there?

I only ever use LJ, although I will (grudgingly) follow links to A03 if I have to.

I'm virtually the same - i've actually checked to see if an author is ON LJ if the link i get recc'd is from FFN purely because - well because I'm a SNOB and most fic (in merlin/sherlock/even TSN) that is on FFn, just isn't the same quality as on LJ and WELL LJ LOOKS PRETTIER AND YOU CAN CHAT TO PEOPLE IN COMMENTS!

I started off on FF.net, and then LJ.. I really really really despise hexfiles/silversnitch etc. But AO3 is brilliant - I think it's just the formatting which I love - much easier to read, but you're right - I only follow LJ links to AO3.

There are certain places i dont like reading but I know that with silversnitch/hexfiles they have a rigorous (or at least A) validation system so I know I'm going to be reading something at least someone else has approved and checked over. FFn just.. idk it doesnt seem to be used or maybe its just not where i read ALL my new fandoms!

I've stuck with LJ for so long sometimes I forget that FF.net does have quality fics. I think it's where most fandom people start off, so it's a little sad that it's sidelined so much. But, then again there's more rubbish on there. Do people post to thehexfiles now? It seems a little old...

yeah there were always new fics there when I visited - not that i do now! But I agree with FFn. It seems so outdated now - either that or we are past reading shit when there's quality to be found elsewhere!

Yeah I completely agree with your FFn experience - I think because when I started out it was a HUGE deal to get twi stuff posted on Twilighted and then the forums there were really how you got to know others in the fandom - then it was finding a beta through these HUGE great fun WC's and I still have those relationships, even though we've all moved on from fandom to fandom or even into the realms of being friends in the "real world."

I do love AO3's layout, its super easy to read and for finding related authors or pairings/tags to search for - its the best!
Though in LJ's defence - IT OWNS ALL THE KINK!MEME's!!

Again, started on ffn (and posted there for years) before finally moving to LJ, and it had more to do with a fandom shift than a platform switch initially (yes, juju, we were in Twi fandom--don't hate! I'll save everyone a lengthy digression here but I have thoughts on this, and they may be condensed in essence to the famous words of Rodney King.)

Honestly I think there are quality fics at ffn, but it depends what you're reading. Merlin and Sherlock are here on LJ, HP is here and on Hexfiles, etc. AO3 seems all over the place, but I've never read something good over there that wasn't cross-posted on LJ. For my current Merlin and Sherlock writing, I'm doing the same, because I like to give people the option of downloading the PDF if they like. That's a great AO3 feature. Otherwise, I stick to LJ and to recs from my delightful fandom friends.

aww your the first person to ever call me juju!!

I don't hate the fandom - its just changed SO much from the early days and the crazy that people are there - it was so SO refreshing to be thrust into reading HP and finding a fandom that wasn't insane (well... until it made me realise that i have virtually NO hard limits when it comes to kinks hehe).

There are, but I think like you, that nearly everyone crossposts SOMEWHERE. I always did with my twi stuff - twilighted and even at the writers coffee shop - and ffn is still where I upload everythiing because it is the easiest way to get your HTML coding to post everywhere else!

I LOVE friend recs and comm recs on LJ, tumblr has become a GREAT resource too as well as the odd tweet!

Oh I always think of you as juju! I don't know why. lol. But no, I know you were just teasing about the Twilight thing. I think I'm just sensitive b/c as a writer relatively new to other fandoms (I've only been writing Merlin since October), it can be hard to feel accepted if you've been in the Twilight fandom and people know that. Anywhoooo.... I have no kink hard limits either, thank you very much HP fandom.

The LJ comms are really a boon, especially since a lot of the writers I love aren't on Twitter. Tumblr I like to look at, but the average age of the average tumblr user seems very young, so I try not to engage too much over there except for the odd rec.

HA! it's kind of funny because in my head i'm always "Boo" because noone knew how to pronounce Miztrezboo (ye olde fanfic name) and would constantly call me Boo in review so... then I became bad with the juju and kept boo lol

Oh I totally feel what you're saying with the twi fandom acceptance in other fandoms - I felt the same way when it came to even preparing to write for HP fandom - then i just went with screw it, they can only hate my words right? I think the whole Twi embaressment thing comes from where the fandom has gone, not where it began :D

Lj Coms are AWESOME! There is ALWAYS a plethora of PLACES to go and see and people to meet and chat to!! Tumblr is a bit young (but hey i'm 30+1 and find it HILARIOUS - maybe I follow older people? or am just completely immature LOL!
