BBC dramas can be hit and miss, and I don't follow them all, though I do confess a weakness for costume dramas. I think this one might be interesting though. Apparently it has a very modern slant to it.
I don't think I've seen Romola Garai before, or if I did she certainly hasn't made a lasting impression.
To be honest, I'm not that fond of this photoshoot. First because I can't get used to GA being a blonde now, and I've never been a big fan of all those sultry temptress photoshoots. She doesn't need all these bells and whistles to look pretty, it's like they're putting so much whipped cream on the cake that you no longer see what made the cake special in the first place.
I don't mind seeing her as a scary hag. I hope she has fun with the role. But it's true that she hasn't played "likeable" in quite a while now. And yeah, it would be nice to have that too.
I don't know the Tesco shirt shoot. I googled Dave Wise and realised it was the photoshoot of my icon. And I agree that he did a fa b job there.
I love the old Ungaro ads, she was so sophisticated in those shots.
You know, at this stage I would find fulfilling any role good or bad that is a fucking LEAD one!!! I'm tired of seeing her play second fiddle all the time.
Was going to do so yesterday on the BBC iPlayer but as I'm on duty this weekend I got scared of watching something with a big "parental guidance" message on a work computer xD It seems wrong !
So will have to wait until I'm home on monday to dl and watch it *sigh*
Just watched part 1, and I must say, I'm enthralled! I really wasn't sure I would like it, but I was hooked after a few minutes - the direction, the costumes, the realism of it are perfect. Once again, well done, BBC. (this is a nice contrast with Any Human Heart where I watched part one, distractedly watched part 2, was on my computer at the same time during part 3 and didn't even watch part 4...I just never got into the story).
I get what you say about Sugar- we have no idea why she would be considered the ultimate seductress, and she doesn't seem very likeable, for what we've seen of her.
But it doesn't make me less eager to watch the next instalments, firstly because of Agnes. The actress is absolutely perfect, and the character broke my heart. I was actually almost crying...what kind of horrific life is that? I know you might argue that all lot of people in this book, let alone in that period of history, had horrific lives, but she's pretty much imprisoned in her own house and her own head, not being able to reach out. Part 2: well, even more hooked! ;) Did I say that I love the direction? The cinematography is just a-ma-zing, it's even more obvious in part 2 where there are some very colourful scenes.
Don't let your (lack of) appreciation of Sugar prevent you from watching the rest: we get a bit more into what's going on in her head and I, personally, really warmed up to her. Now it's the main guy, William, that I am not so fussed about. He showed some traits that really brushed me the wrong way.
Agnes is still Agnes and will break your heart.
I haven't even commented on Gillian's part yet: as usual, she is just that good and totally unrecognisable. Watching her play like this reminded me why she's my favourite actress and why I watch (and always will) anything she's in. She's just incredible. I wonder how much of her we'll see in the next two episodes, though at least I like the series enough to want to watch it regardless of how many scenes she has.
Debating whether or not to start the novel once I'm done watching - but 800+ pages is long!

I read the book years ago and remember finding it really involving. I'm usually allergic to bbc drama but I might have to make time for this one.

Am I the only one who truly doesn't like that new shoot? Ugh.
Also, G looks fucking scary in this one. Another unpleasant role. Sigh. It'd be nice to see her as someone likeable again, for a change.
