That's essentially the pun of it. It's a lot easier to type 'Gaang' than 'Aang and the gang'. We're extremely punny people in the Avatar fandom and most of it stems from the puns in the show. (IE Sokka calls the group the "Boomer-Aang Squad" in one episode because it has "Aang" in it.)
