[ All of ye fortunate manorites can enjoy a screenful of black leather and blonde bob as Mello, half his face covered in a black handkerchief (so much easier to wear than a gas mask- and more agreeable to eating chocolate), sits triumphantly in a large armchair in front of room Ninety-Nine.

And blinks to Mello generally just flipping off the entire Manor. He sighs and pinches his nose, the sentiment appreciated, however. Luckily his door opens inward and he steps toward it, indeed slouched over with one hand in his pocket. The door opens and he stands behind the chair, leaning over Mello's shoulder.]]
You'll invite trouble with gestures such as the one you made just now.

If you haven't noticed, there is already trouble.
[A pause then his voice drops]
Who was that...who sent that text?

This is why he intended his successors to work together.
He draws in a slow breath and then straightens just a bit, climbing over the chair and of course defeating the purpose of its being in front of his door. He shoo's Mello over and squishes in beside him, feet perching once more onto the edge of it even in the cramped condition. Mello shouldn't have to risk his life for L.]]
I noticed.
This is nothing I am unused to handling.
[[He stares a few moments at Mello, trying to collect his thoughts. What's more dangerous, leaving him in the dark or telling him that it's Beyond Birthday and opening cans of worms? But if he finds out and hears that L didn't tell him a thing- then what would he think?]]It is someone from my past that we're both well aware of. I'd like Mello to promise me he won't go near him until I've thought things out ( ... )

Now he could have just gotten them BOTH in more trouble.]
....thats not the point [He mumbles before casting his gaze off into space.
By a process of elimination Mello can come to a tentative conclusion that it was Beyond. And the shock of it doesn't register any better on his face than had the information that there had been more than one of him in this place.
Like that the information gets tucked inside his brain and filed for later experimentation and prodding.]
If I promise will you go back inside the room? [Deals. Always deals.]

Near had not been able to watch as much of last week's feeds as he would have liked, considering the poor timing of his waking, but he certainly had not missed Mello's little display on the beach. Since Mello never explicitly stated what the purpose of these seemingly meaningless videos are for, and Near knows that his rival never does anything without purpose, he obviously assumes that, by default, they are intended for him. Mello first perhaps intended to taunt Near's inability to leave the house, and now, perhaps to show off his closeness with L? Unless something had happened behind the scenes, that's all Near can assume for now.
He gives a sigh. Seriously, Mello. Seriously? There's competitiveness and then there's obsession. He turns on the audio feed and speaks with his best unimpressed tone.]
Was the chair really necessary?

and sitting on the floor would have ruined the effect...not to mention he alone makes a poor excuse for a barricade]
Why do you care?

All day?
[Ahh, now he gets it. There's no reason for Mello to hang outside L's door all day if all he wants to do is prove a point. Besides, if he had wanted to demonstrate his closeness with L, there were more effective ways.
There are only two people Near knows of who pose direct threats to L at the moment, and since it's highly unlikely to be coincidence that Mello made this video shortly after another, directed at L, was also posted, Near assumes this is due to B. This is mildly irritating, that Mello and B had made contact without his knowing. Near does not enjoy being left out of the loop.]
Why not just go for the source of the matter? Surely that would be more effective than ticking off the entire manor.
[No, he does not answer your question.]

[Burter wastes no time in heading over to room 99. He's eager to prove this "L" wrong and sees no reason to wait in doing so. He's at the door not long after the challenge is issued. So, L thinks he's faster than the 'fastest in the universe'? Well, he won't be thinking that when--
...There is a man in the hallway, Burter realizes. A man in an armchair. Is this L, perhaps, waiting for him?]
Are you L?
[He folds his arms across his chest.]
I'm looking for "L".

[He's not going to say that he is, he's not a pretender to the throne after all, but he can yank your chain if he wants.
Besides, what would a large blue person want with L? He has to be suspicious.]

[It's a mix of excitement and viciousness you hear in his snake-like voice.]
I hope you're ready to lose!

[Mello mumbles in annoyance]
But set your terms anyway. [Might as well see what this is all about]
