[Jack's been making his rounds and looking very much like a yeti in his many furs that he collected from a bulk dry goods store, he grinned when he saw another to talk to. Sure, he's not entirely conventional but a man with a lot of books would have a lot to talk about. Now Jack was curious.]

You can read the chicken scratch?

[Yeah, Russian wasn't an accessible language to learn in his time. It was a blended language then and very hard to learn.]

Yes, I can - although this is hardly the most invigorating thing to occupy my time with, I have no means of getting anymore books.

Better to use time to learn than to waste and do nothing, eh? How is that you came to learn the language of the Northern reaches?

[Holmes folds up his paper and turns his attention to another cigarette, pulled from the packet]

I was taught it by my mother, although that's another story for another time

And yes, I quite agree - intelligence is not a privelige, it's a gift, and one should strive to improve the mind where ever possible
