This is a gorgeous meta, and I'm going to have to come back to it tomorrow (or rather, later on today...4:45 am here), and I do get that *this* was not the point of this post, but just wanted to say E/S for me was never about Stefan being the Good One. (He's a complete and total psychopath, and in there was my fascination...s3 E/S is my favorite.)

I think most people, who have any sophistication or experience with fandom could never reduce the boys down to either *good* or *bad* but sometimes, if people aren't thinking too deeply about something and just see the superficialness of it all, they miss the complexity.

I was not concerned that you felt that way at all. I have a friend who has always preferred Stefan and one day we were talking and she admitted it was more that she liked Stefan for HERSELF than for Elena; that as the show progressed she came to the point where she feels Damon and Elena are the better match, it's just that she still prefers Stefan. Then my other friend and I were like STEFAN IS WAY SCARIER THAN DAMON, DO YOU NOT SEE THAT??? Again, watching it in a simplistic way, not seeing the complexities. After we pointed it out to her, she was like OH.

I like it when people UNDERSTAND Stefan and like him anyway. It makes me feel better about my irrational love for Damon. Because I UNDERSTAND that he's awful. I just love him anyway! :D
