It starts with Puck and Quinn being friendly pre-series. Like, I always imagined that they were both attracted to the other, but Quinn was always a social climber, and so when Finn gave her attention, she jumped on that. Because Puck didn't stake a claim, Finn went with it, and Puck was resentful, even though it was his own fault. He always knew if he'd have told Finn, Finn would have never gone after Quinn, but being an immature dickwad, he just decided to steal her away because he loved Finn, but he was also jealous of him on a lot of levels. Stealing Quinn was both in his power (because he knew she was into him) and a way to prove he was better than Finn in some way. But then Quinn didn't automatically break up with Finn even though she'd had sex with Puck (which he knew was a big deal because she was virgin -- the wine coolers were always a cop out as far as I was concerned, Quinn was far too controlled to "let" anyone get her drunk), so that pissed Puck off even more. Then he finds out she's pregnant...and well, there you go,
( ... )
At their base, though, there is this element of friendship, which always makes me sure that pre-series, they were friends, and then all through Freshman year, Puck was trying to figure out how to shift them to more than friends. Then she got together with Finn, so he hooked up with Santana (my head canon has always been that Santana took Puck's v-card), which also explains Quinn's jealousy of Santana.
I could keep going, but I'll stop.
Oh, one more thing, I always thought, and I just remembered because I just finished rewatching the Pilot, that I thought Puck and Quinn would have also bonded over feeling like they were losing Finn to Glee club.
