I didn't start shipping this pairing until the second season of the show, but there is a conversation between the two of them in the Pilot episode that could be the perfect foreshadowing: she is falling all over herself, obviously crushing on him, and Stefan says, just to be clear and not give her the wrong idea, that they are never going to happen.
The irony that they ARE going to happen is one of those happy accidents that sometimes occur in writing, since I'm sure the writers of this show had no idea what would develop between these two characters over time. The sweetness of their friendship, and the slow ease that they have fallen into with one another is something I've enjoyed so much. And there were times when both characters really grated on me when they interacted with anyone else, but when they are together? They're just magical.
They are best friends, but they will be more than that some day, I'm sure of it. And they do look really good together, too, though that's just the shallow part of me talking (when it comes to shipping, I'm about 80% shallow, though, truth be told, LOL). This gif I used is one of my all-time favorite Stefan and Caroline moments, though, because this is where I truly began to understand that Caroline's first loyalty would always be to Stefan; she has chosen him over Tyler when he was boyfriend, and over Elena again and again (where's that sisterhood code, Care?) and that's fine. I like that Caroline can't even seem to help herself; Stefan is her person, she will always choose him.
