What if...

Computer Science (and science in general) is evolving fast, Windows XP is great (comparing to others microsoft Operating Systems) but isn't it time to go to the next level? When will we see an OS like in the movies? A 3D Windows. It seems Microsoft is working on it with his next Windows installment code name Longhorn. So, in a chat with mansond, ( Read more... )

I'm pretty sure longhorn's not gonna have 3D futuristic graphics.
It actually sounds less than great.
Google it, there's plenty of info.

A virtual reality desktop or computer system does sound pretty sweet though.

I think i read somewhere it would have a 3D component depending on the power of your PC.
I think there can be a 3D fututistic OS by 2007. Computers will have power enough to use a futuristic OS while still be able to play games on it. If not, they could disable 3D OS environment features while playing games or working with computer graphics. It's a way. The limit is always our imagination.

Though your right about the imagination thing, I just don't see microsoft
being the ones to do something this innovative. But then again who knows?
I'm actually hoping longhorn doesn't disappoint, only time will tell.

In the end, it's all a matter of time...

I love that quote from Al.. very smart.. I think the technology industry will have to look to new alternatives and pretty soon at that.. I remember taking classes on computer hardware and the instructor saying that he couldn't see PC's going over 2 gigs.. at the time the highest processor was a 900mhz or something.. he said circuits and wires can only be slow close together.. which is very true.. I really don't know much about the "new" age processors out there now.. except that they rock.. and I too want more speed..

but what do i know about any of this.. i am pretty good at playing smart even though i am completely dumb..

doh!

We're hitting a limit for now. Not anything concrete, but for now CPU's aren't going to get much faster because the manufacturing process they're created with would cause them to generate too much heat to dissipate.

That's where we're at right now, we can theoretically go faster, but not unless we all want to be running water cooled rigs, or something even more extreme than that.

So what both AMD and Intel have decided is to increase the cores per chip. If you can't push a single core past ~4ghz without dangerous heat levels, put 2 cores on, and push them.

Sadly, I don't see technology freeing us, not in the way it's being created.

Technology is sold by greedy people, they want us to need it, not for it to help us not need anything.

The increases in technology have done very few good things for our lives. People work more now, have less free time, make less money and are generally less happy. I'm not saying this is all the fault of technology, but it certainly hasn't been the saviour everyone said it would be.

Either way, it will be a long time before we have access to an AI system like Skynet (terminator), and either way, it would be fairly easy to program in safeguards so that it wouldn't learn too much, or break free of it's programming.

And yes, longhorn looks quite kickass, but if you look at the requirements that have been posted so far, it's also going to require quite the computer to run, which means that it will also have a much bigger virtual footprint in almost every category.

Longhorn seems to be the thing we needed to have in an O.S. The requirements i haven't seen them yet but i guess that 2-3 years after it's release, most people will have a system capable of running it with most part of it's functions activated ( ... )

Aye, I have an Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube.

Out of all 3 of them, I'd have to say I love my Gamecube the most, it's provided me with the most amount of fun.
