This one wasn't really that bad but it irked me. I work for a grocery store of which there are several in the area. I went to a location (one that I don't work at) to purchase alcohol. I used the u-scan and rang through all my stuff and waited for the lady to come card me. Knowing how these machines work and how the store is supposed to operate I ( Read more... )

Yup, it sucks when you're innocently shopping and people start making a big deal about checking you out,as if it's not actually a store or something. Awkward.......

Urgh...those bloody self-checkout machines are the bane of my existence. We don't even bother to use them when we buy alcohol anymore because, inevitably, someone will question the fact that I am 23 and not 17 and demand ID.

*ahem* What they should do is have a little scanner on them where you can scan your passport/drivers license *nods* It would be most useful...dunno what sort of tech youd need for that to work though XD

That would never work, if you could scan an ID yourself, anyone underage could easily borrow an ID from a friend and illegally buy alcohol.

You'd need a fingerprint reader. :P

I hate it when I have an incredibly clever idea that's perfect in every way except for being completely unworkable. I feel for you right now.

I dislike this aspect of the self-scanners as well.

Whether it's a coupon or checking ID, it still relies on an employee to finalize the transaction... and half the time, the employee manning it is doing 3 different things at once and it's obvious they resent having to help you.

Yeah... when you're one person getting an item or two that isn't really on sale, self-scans are fine.
When stores have well-covered self-scans, all it fine.
Otherwise?
Christ Almighty. If you are not capable of supervising more than one SCO machine at a time, don't have that many open!!!

My favorites are Lowes Foods, whose self-scans always seem to be at literally the exact opposite edge of the store at the regular registers. They lock up if you try to
put in your "alt ID" (phone number or card scan for a rewards member)
use ID (alcohol, cigarettes, etc)
purchase produce
purchase things on sale for more than like 2% off

which basically encompasses almost all transactions.

That's obnoxious to say the least.

I love self-scan it's a savior on 99% of my shopping trips but when a machine has a hiccup it's frustrating when it takes forever to get fixed. I got cash back once and it was out, so that was a fun adventure to say the least. Argh.
