I walked in the Alexandria VA Turkey Trot Five-Miler on Thursday morning. My brother and I ended up at the very end of the race starting off, so with 3500+ people, we left the finishing line at least five minutes after the race started. We started out right in front of the race official who was opening streets behind the race. We were told they ( Read more... )

Umm....

Yeah, I've read this entry five times over now and I STILL don't understand what the hell is supposed to be the bad_service part.

I think, and I could be wrong, that it's because they were running a marathon (or something?) and the streets were being opened when people were still running that part of the route?

Possibly?

I'm still trying to understand, but the wall o text doesn't exactly help.

It sounds like the officials were opening the streets to traffic at a faster rate than they were supposed to in a 5 mile run/walk, forcing the walking participants to the sidewalk.

I guess it kind of sucks if you paid to be there and would've been able to finish normally if they had opened the streets at the correct pace.

Wow, WTF? I hope there were no new runners there, if that was my first race I would probably be too terrified/nervous to do another one. The chance of getting lost or even if you know your way around, just miss the race you were supposed to be particpating in? Ugh.

Maybe you were going slower than you thought. For most people 12 minutes per mile is more like a jog, and most people walk at a pace of 17-29 minutes per mile.

That's what I was thinking. I wouldn't have as much of a problem with passing my run time in the military if I could WALK my mile at a 12 minute pace and I walk pretty fast (friends always complain).

It's entirely possible, but they were still opening streets back up at a very fast pace- by the end, even some runners git left behind, to my understanding. Also, I wasn't jogging, but I was walking pretty much as fast as I could without breaking into a run.

Assuming markers and a stopwatch, I'd think OP was able to be pretty accurate. My "normal" walking mile is about 15 mins, but I think if I walked as fast as I could it'd be closer to 12-13, not totally unreasonable.
