USPS sucks.

We had to file our taxes via snail mail this year as we qualify for the First Time Home Buyers credit. We fill out all the forms, write everything down, sign it, put a stamp on it, and send it on it's way via USPS. First Class. This was on the 27th of January ( Read more... )

"i'll not be coming back here", beaaaan! beeaaannnnnn!!!!, you don't *always* gotta speak up, didn't read the box/sign/instructions, a wave of understanding, postal service

If I were mailing Very Sensitive Information I would do so in a way that was traceable and, if I failed to do so, would take responsibility.

This.

Your $.44 service failed. These things happen.

Besides, the hang up is probably at the IRS. Just because it hasn't gotten to people who would put it in the conputer, doesn't mean it hasn't been delivered to the IRS.

exactly this

The USPS deals with billions of pieces of mail. Your local distribution center probably deals with millions of pieces a day.

Have to say, I think it's pretty crazy to just stick a stamp on something that sensitive. At minimum, I would've used some kind of trackable service. Yes, it's frustrating that it was lost, but regular mail gets lost every day, and without tracking, there's no way for you to prove you even mailed it.

I'd suck it up as a lesson learned and pay for tracking (or use a tracked shipping service like FedEx or UPS) for the resend.

I agree with this comment.
I mean really, there is nothing they can do about it.
You should have gotten it tracked when you sent it out, with crucial personal information being in it.

Agreed. Certified mail, always, for anything important.

No it's not crazy for you to expect them to reimburse you, imo.

There's a way you can send it, I forget what it's called, they put a card on the back of the envelope and when it gets where it's going, someone has to sign for it and you get the card back with the sig. That, and a tracking number I would think it would get where it needs to be.

I don't get how a 1st class envelope just vanishes? I'd be wary and watch your credit report and all that.

You're thinking of certified mail. And mail goes missing all the time. All. The. Time.

Yeah, I think it's certified.

And ok? Maybe I'm thinking incorrectly, but aren't you paying more for first class mail? It's not just sticking a stamp on it and wishing it well.

First class mail IS just sticking a stamp on it.

I'm dealing with something similar. I sold an old BlackBerry of mine to someone, and it reached Nashville, was scanned there, and has apparently dropped off the radar. I mailed it in December. Since I have insurance on it, I've been trying to file and claim and the investigator has been dragging his feet and avoiding me. I even got the whole, "A lot of people claim their mail is lost" line. Ugh.

Same. A friend bought a pair of shoes online and had it shipped to me since they don't ship to europe. I picked up the package and went to the post office to send it to him straight away. He hasn't gotten it. I sent it in like, october

I just think that we shouldn't be held responsible if the mail is lost by someone else. I mean, yeah, maybe we should have sent it another way but those services start at 5 dollars and move their way up from there. However, just because letters get lost all the time, doesn't make that OK. Would you frequent a restaurant that forgot your delivery?

I'm of the opinion that my time and life are worth more than five dollars, hours of arguing and aggravation. You are, of course, welcome to fight The System and weigh the worth of your own time.
