At first I thought "Oh, how sad, no one's threading with them. Maybe because they're new? So their grammar is confusing, that doesn't mean they're bad!" and decided to give this person, we shall call them Bob, a chance.

Yes, despite these two warning signs, I proceeded to Be A Good Person and thread with this poor, lost soul.

Turns out there's ( Read more... )

Okay, so I don't watch the new Sherlock, but...

I just about fell over laughing from the image of Sherlock Holmes calmly saying, "But I'm dyeing my hair, from whence did this angst originate?"

Plus, I don't see Sherlock as the type to say that he cares about anyone but Watson. But the modern show may be different.

In any case, my sympathy--you have it.

Imagine that in a voice similar to Alan Rickman's and it's even better.

Of course he cares. But he doesn't show or say it. My response was basically "Of course I care. I just don't pay attention to you all the time because I'm busy with other shit. What is your problem?"

Well, even if we can allow the 'all boys school using him as a girl for a play' (considering this happens frequently in manga and anime, and may be where he got the idea)... I would think, when he transferred schools, that big old packet that was sent along with him from an obviously ALL MALE SCHOOL would keep the staff from, you know, thinking he was FEMALE.

One would think. Also, being labeled as a girl... doesn't make you a girl. I have hairy man arms and sometimes dress in a waistcoat and tie, but that doesn't make me a man unless I say it does. And even if through some wacky anime hijinx I went to a coed school and someone made a mistake like that, I would pitch a huge fit.

Yeah. I find it hard to believe they'd look at the packet and go "Oh, it's a girl from XXXX Boys School"

Perhaps this happens in wacky anime world, but not... usually. I would assume.

Do you really need to add the condescending remarks about the person being a native-speaker or not, when the rant is pretty much only about their characterization abilities?

I find it hilarious you're mocking someone's poor English and used "they're" instead of "their", too.

I just now noticed that, apologies. It's internet law: a grammar nazi will almost always make horrendous grammar/spelling mistakes when least expected :(

My point with mentioning that is that on top of characterization fail, their grammar/phrasing is also very very poor, which makes their poses even more confusing.

Then just say their grammar/phrasing is poor? It's kinda annoying to read a rant like that. Unless you include an example of some phrase that makes it clear it's not their first language, or if you know people are avoiding them because of it, I don't see what the relevance of how they learned the language is.

Fair enough. In rereading, it does sound unnecessarily nasty. My apologies.

if an all boy's school does a play where girls are required, in my experience, they open up auditions to the near-by girl's schools. Unless things work differently in Germany.

It isn't even a country thing; it just varies with the school, or sometimes even from show to show. My high school was an all girls' school and frequently did plays with male characters: Our girls played them. Our brother school, on the other hand, did audition from girls' schools for their productions. These are two schools which generally had a lot to do with each other in the same city. Yet another boys' school I was involved with for a production imported girls for some shows but had boys playing girls for the interschool Shakespeare festival/competition. (Then again, I guess there we could argue historical accuracy. Having seen the video, though, they had to tell me it was a guy.)

Then there's my bandmate's dance school, who imported boys for Sleeping Beauty but didn't for The Lion King (resulting in a fabulous but effeminate Scar).

Yeah, I had a discussion with a fellow theatre friend about this. I agree that it's not totally crazy to think that an all boy's school might do that, if they were open about that sort of thing and all the boys involved were okay with it.

But that doesn't mean that you'll automatically be identified as a girl for the rest of your life, when he didn't seem to have a problem with that sort of thing before. Or, you know. Make the co-ed school sign you up as girl or whatever madness.

As a side note, an all girls Lion King sounds awesome.

Mm, that part is weird.

This dance school had the odd boy in the tap and particularly the hiphop classes, but once we get to ballet principal level they don't have any boys. It was a fun production.

Genderbent theatre productions are okay.

Suddenly being a girl because of being in one? Notsomuch.

Unfortunate that more boys don't like ballet :( Though I think some tap dancing hyenas would have been badass.
