Dear multitude of roleplayers wishing to play 'orphans',

Orphanages do not exist in any present day, 'Western' setting. If your character is American or British they will go into a care system. They do not get deposited into a building on the moors, remain there throughout childhood and then get released at the age of eighteen ready to attend ( Read more... )

But...but...but...It adds ultra-cool flair and makes them special when bad things happen that the character can't change!

Srsly, if people are gonna spend a lot of time with a character, they need to do some research as to what they're putting into said character.

I'm from the UK and I'm aware of the different funding (and how hard it is to get it) but I wasn't certain if the goverment would cover that much. That's why I've included it. That's a valid point, though.

Damn you for blowing a hole in my plan!

You're right, Britain does make it much more credible. I'll give the British guy a pass on that part of his story.

I'm pretty sure they weren't anything like a Dickens orphanage. Further reading shows that the homes don't usually have a high census and that the children live as close to family style as possible.

So, going to one of those orphanages would be like

I pressed post too soon

going to one of those orphanages is more like going to a long term group home than anything else.

Though this is helpful a lot of the links I clicked through are actually private schemes which require enrollment.

The children going through to these places would still need to be put into the public care system and then placed through it into the 'home'. (Or, it seems, the 'academy'.)

A few I looked at actually appeared to be boarding schools that enrolled a handful of children in the care system as well.

Not exactly the orphanages a lot of people are envisioning.
