Oy, the manipulation. The entitlement mentality. It burns.

While RL stress is always something that players (and ST/GMs alike) are going to have to deal with, there's a rather definitive, thick line of why characters should/should not be permitted within a game.

Just - no.
As someone who - no, not even as someone who's had to deal with special snowflakes in the past. Just no.

There aren't words.

Well, save - "NO."

If your mother is dying, that's probably one of the LAST things you should be trying to pull. A good player would not use this like that.

A lot of people try that on a chat I go on as an excuse for their not following the rules. "I don't have to follow the rules my mother/brother/dog died!" 9 times out of 10 they're lying for attention or to get out of getting banned. =S

Makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong when I lose someone I care about to death that I withdraw from online stuff for a week or two instead of throwing it in everyone's face.

This is just what I was about to say. A lot of whiny people like to make up horrible things happening to them in real life to drum up sympathy and make people treat them better. If their mother was really terminally ill, I'd think they'd have more important things to occupy their time (like, oh, I don't know, spending time with their mother! than some pretendy fun times game online.

I agree with you, for most part. Just the last bit rubs off wrong.

If someone's mother is terminally ill, it doesn't mean the player couldn't or shouldn't spend time doing things they enjoy. For some people that little pretendy fun times might be the relief they need to keep dealing with the heavy RL pressure. Depending on circumstances, a person might not be able to spend 24/7 by their mother's side anyway, nor might they want to.

Of course, using their mother's illness like the person OP posts about, gah. It makes me think he's lying about his mom's condition too.

You've pointed out that means precisely shit, right? I mean, hell, my dad died unexpectedly the first day of spring break. I got to spend the first day of spring break driving home, then riding to Vegas with Mom and the little brother to say goodbyes and pull the plug.

And when I got back to RP? It wasn't any harder AT ALL to follow the rules.
