If I RP'd Pokemon, I'd allow it.

They probably do it to make everyone equal on a battle level.

I was in one, (I don't believe ANY of our characters were starting trainers, and they all had varying amounts of experience) but it's no longer open.

My character's been through all that shit. She got her Pokemon. She beat about eight Gyms (note that the game took place in Kanto AND Johto) then lost interest. SHE ALMOST BLEW UP THE GOD DAMN INDIGO PLATEU FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

That's why.

Well, I can understand the sentiment of wanting to have RPers play as new trainers. I'm guessing it's to prevent new people from forcing control/shifting power balances of IC scenes via OMGZ MY POKEMANZ R MOR POWRFUL THAN URS SMASHSMASHSMASHSMASHSMASH to older veterans.

Also, there's the matter of canonical changes from RP to RP. Is Brock still the Pewter Gym Leader, or did he leave to be a breeder? Does Erika still only allow female trainers? Is Cinnabar Island still in one piece? Is the Pokemon Tower still a burial site or been converted to a radio tower? Are any muns playing gym leaders? Important information can be lost like that.

I see your point, but aren't there ways of establishing veteran players? I mean, they could always do a ranking. Say apps are open for characters with certain gym badges (and therefore have their pokemon at a certain level). Try and balance it out that way.

As for the latter half of your argument, couldn't they set that up as criteria? Be like, "The game takes place in R/B verse." Decline any apps that alter it.

Not that I disagree with you, but I don't know that this is so much the suck of a bad roleplayer as it is the frustration with limited available opportunities to roleplay as per your personal preferences.
