I just started my 4th horse under saddle. I did about a month of groundwork before mounting her. The actual mounting was pretty boring. She stood there like a seasoned pro. Walk and trot were fine. She had steering and brakes. Now cantering is an entirely different story! About the 4th stride she'll throw a massive buck. She's had more time than I can count cantering around on the lungeline both with a saddle and without. This is just her quirk. She's off for the winter now but I figure we'll have a few more rodeos on the spring ( ... )

I think if someone had been holding a longe line on that horse, they would have ended up either injured or losing their grip on the rope, and it would have been all over the place. In the end, groundwork only does so much. The horse was fine to mount for the most part, and I agree with others that it doesn't actually look like it's first ride.

That is the third time riding. If my dutch is correct "de derde keer derop" Is "the third time on"

So....doing it wrong imo.

As for the riding-VERY GOOD-but the first few rides should not have to be like that.

Horse looks like a nutter, possibly some rough handling in the past. Doesn't seem like the first ride, or that ground work will help this situation. Something has scared the bejeebus out of that horse.

I agree with this. The horse seems to rein very well, which implies that the groundwork has been done, but it seems to be afraid of the jumps (witness the sheep-jump as it passes the far jump for the first time), and generally is behaving quite erratically.

If it really is only the third ride, I'd guess something uncool happened in the first or second one to make the horse anticipate unpleasnantness this time round. So I can't call whether it's bad handling or not, but I sure wish I had that person's sticky bum!
