So, I really do admire what they are doing by getting these horses started and adoptng them out... but this one... with the hands? I have NO IDEA what the rider is asking, and judging by the mare's mouth, neither does she. :s

I'm not a steller rider, I ( Read more... )

I don't like to snark on rescues because their main objective is to get the horses healthy and find them good homes. Some of them don't have professional riders available and I doubt they have the funds to hire one for sale videos. At least they got SOME form of training under this horse and she's at least green broke, which makes her a lot more desirable than an old broodmare that's only halter broke. Now, if the rescue had a bad rap or their horses were dirty or skinny or the rider was mistreating them, that would be another story.

I'm not sure why but this horse rescue doesn't do a very good job showing some of their horses.

Because they have a loooot of horses. 18 up for adoption at present, and I'm not sure how many of the horses on their 'rehabs/arrivals' are actually with them, but they currently list over 100 (some of these are long-term horses who will live out days as horses in the paddock, but many will go onto be adoption horses).

They are a BIG rescue with a lot of land and good to do, and I don't think they have the time or funds to do perfect videos, especially on horses that are in rehab and progressing through training. It seems like better riders go on horses for their actual "Adoption" videos. They do periodic video updates (every month-three months I've seen, more if a horse is making fast progress) plus pictures and text/blog updates on each horse's page. For a rescue with a lot of horses passing through, it seems pretty good to me.

Yeah, I agree. It must be hard to find good riders to show off their horses and who knows how well trained they are.

What the shit is in that poor horses mouth to keep making her evade like that besides the newbie rider who should not be on that horse in the first place? What a horrible video. Poor horse.

yup, sure does. I'm pretty sure its just a green broke mare who doesn't even know what a bit is.

THE MOST HORRIBLE BIT EVER, THE D-RING SNAFFLE

I dunno, maybe I've been around a lot of green horses, but the mare's chewing of the bit doesn't look like anything horrible to me... just looks like a green horse playing with a bit.

I may be wrong, but I think this horse was probably wandering a bit off the track the rider wanted her to take, which is probably why all the back-and-forth of the hands, especially at the end; in my limited experience, green horses have to be taught how to walk a straight line. One of the things I've had to learn with handling a green horse is to separate and exaggerate the cues till they get the gist of what I want, and then work on refining the cue. This horse looks to be pretty green, so many of the cues are bigger than I'd expect to see on a fully trained horse.

Now, since I can count the number of green horses I've helped to train on one hand, I may be talking out my ass here.

Yeah, I kind of agree with this. I think her hands are a little crazy, but having been on horses that drift all over the place - not green ones, mind you, just ones who like to wander - the cues get a little weird looking. If she's a green horse who doesn't respond to leg as well as can be just yet, putting her "between your legs and hands" might be a little advanced yet?

I don't like the back and forth stuff, but it would be a reasonable explanation. Granted, they shouldn't have what looks like a fairly green rider on him...but it doesn't look like her adoption video (site says she's up for sponsorship), so who knows what kind of ride it was.

Well, don't think too many top-notch riders are willing to sacrifice time to go to a rescue to work very green horses. You can figure that most "good" riders have a horse of their own, or at least access to "nice" horses. Thus the horse-crazy kids who can't afford a horse or lessons end up volunteering at rescues because horse time is horse time.

Though I really don't think the rider in this video is horrible, but it can be hard to judge since that mare is so green. I mean, this is what Fugly said:

This is Nevada, who gave birth to her baby at the Fallon feedlot on Christmas. Yet another broodmare, dumped before she even gave birth, with no training. A big hooray to Shiloh Horse Rescue for starting yet another horse under saddle and giving her a future! Nevada is available for adoption.

This is a horse who hasn't done anything but create other horses - she's not going to ride like a million dollar show horse.

For sure, for sure. Goodness, if I had these guys within driving distance, I would be there every day to ride little mares like this! Especially if I didn't have close access to people who already use me as cheap butt-in-saddle labor. xD

Plus, here's the other Nevada video. Looks like this guy is horse-smart, and though there's the whole "don't ride with loose horses", generally this video is nice. Her baby is a DOLL.

It looks like a green horse that doesn't walk in a straight line and also doesn't steer very well yet. Its an ugly video, but at least it shows you that she's willing enough to let someone sit on her back and pull her around. I hope she goes to a good home.
