Bad_riding on the Silver Screen

Today I was watching a pretty interesting documentary on the Free Masons/Knights Templar on the History Channel and as I was watching, it occurred to me: There is so much bad_riding every day on TV, in cheesy documentaries being shown in schools, or in movies. The particular treat I got today was watching a reenactment of some Knights Templar ( Read more... )

hmm where have i seen bad riding in the media...um..everywhere!
What ive always wondered though, is when a horse, say, falls from a cliff in a really old western movie, and you see it close up scrambling on the side and it falls, is how did they film this? Not with the actual horse falling right? ok, this may be sounding really blonde but no-ones been able to tell me lol

I had a book as a kid, "The Fascinating Techniques of Training Movie Horses." I remember how they said that in the older movies, they wouldn't train horses to fall (which can be done), they would use something called a flying W, which would be a wire wrapped around the horse's neck and the other end tied to a buried log. They'd run the horse to the end of the wire, and the horse would fall, but also often break its neck. The book's main point, though, was that there are different ways to actually train horses... I remember them praising the Frances the Talking Mule movies.

Bad riding in tv drives me nuts, especially when it's supposed to be showcasing good riding! As in "Actor is the most amazing champion rider evahs!!1!11!" *bounceflopyank - take two when rider falls on their ass cuz poneh stopped*

I can't even watch most "horse" movies. I was a big fan of the original My Friend Flicka, but Tim McGraw's remake Flicka shouldn't have even had the same name. My mother, who loved the movie Horse Whisperer (another terrible film!), and I sat in the theatre cracking jokes and making fun of the entire thing it was so bad!

mocking ANY 'horse' stuff in movies is a favorite pastime, from nitpicking on the 'modern' tack to the breeds chosen to 'spot the stunt horse' when it suddenly changes genders :P

haha I do this too! it's quite funny, especially when a 'stallion' is suddenly a mare for half of the film!

I do believe this can be see a lot in Black beauty, the 1990s version! He's famale for a bit of it!

There is so much bad riding in movies! I frequently miss plot elements because I'm shouting (mentally) "Get off his mouth, you bean-brain!" I really only remember the good riding. John Wayne, enough said. And, in his version of Stagecoach, there's a guy riding at full gallop, reloading a shotgun. I'm looking for a clip...

...And, how many horses played Shadowfax in LOTR? ha ha

Virginia's Run - They are constantly changing between a dappled grey and a flea-bitten grey! I think it's mostly the close shots, like petting it's nose or hugging it's neck you can tell the horse is a flea-bitten grey, but all the riding shots are of a light dappled grey. =P I believe the mane keeps changing sides as well, so there may be more then one dappled grey too. =P I haven't watched it in a while, but that's what I remember. =P
