You know if you're on a budget, you're not obligated to put people up in a hotel. It's a good idea to arrange a block of rooms at a hotel since they'll give you a discounted price, but you don't have to pay for the rooms.
If I were you, I'd do that and then maybe host a very informal party or something one of the nights before the wedding and serve some hor d'oeuvres, beer, and wine. Weddings can always be a bit rushed and not enough time to visit with everyone the day of the wedding...it goes by in a blur (I know, I've had two!) so this will allow you ample time to visit beforehand.
Thanks for the advice! I hadn't even thought of not having a chance to visit a long time with everyone during the wedding -- some kind of dinner the night before is an excellent idea.
Just to make sure we're clear. I'm not talking about anything fancy. Heck, pizza and beer would work. I think the object is to kick back and relax, visit with people you probably haven't seen for awhile and for your guests to get to know each other.
Holy cow I missed that news last week. Congratulations!
I'm with the other poster, no one expects you to pay for their hotel arrangements, but it is definitely a good move to shop around and reserve a block of rooms at whatever price you can get.
