The all too familiar stench of fire and smoke filled the air. Flames leaked from the windows and doors of the cabin, swallowing wood and iron and flesh… swallowing all John had had left. The now useless Colt rested heavy against his side. John wanted nothing more than to just drop it into the dirt, to rid himself of its stink that burned into his clenched palm like acid.
But he didn’t. He couldn’t. He had to take it to Bobby’s, to find out how it worked, if there was a way to build replicas of the bullets. He was going to find that son of a bitch and he was going to kill it, tear it apart piece by piece for taking away his wife, his sons… his everything. He was ending it.
Embers drifted upwards, into the velvet sky. Beams cracked and crashed. He had to leave, he knew that, before someone came to investigate. But he couldn’t. He stood rooted to the spot, watching his life go up in flames again, his heart a bloody wound in his chest, new pain, old pain, all mangled into the strange desire to just lay down and die.
Hell wasn’t just a place below - it was here and it was real. It drove men mad. John couldn’t blame them, because who was he to talk? He’d failed, failed on so many levels he put the fallen angels themselves to shame. There was only so much a man could take.
Turning away slowly, he slung his duffel over his shoulder as he walked into the darkness, alone now, away from the light and the warmth that, even if it was hellfire, could maybe ease the throbbing a little. If all he could do was kill, he was going to kill.
He was John Winchester. He survived, whether he wanted to or not.
