Bad spellers of the world, untie!

This evening on the way home on the train, I had the awful pleasure of sitting next to three adults trying to complete a crossword puzzle. They tried fitting words like "limmeric" into the grid and were completely baffled as to why other words wouldn't fit in around it.

Thankfully, a remedy for the bad spelling is coming very soon.

I'd be interested to know how the Welsh are reacting to this -- everyone knows the Welsh fled North Bay back in November fearing the wrath of the potential of having to deal with Councillor Briggs. I mean, what about people named Lloyd? How does the by-law deal with the redundant 'l'? I'd be even more scared for those of Welsh origins with the name Ffffflllllllylllllwwwweeeeenllllcd. (In case you're wondering, it's pronounced "Bob.") I can just see an over-zealous constitutional lawyer putting forth a charter challenge against the by-law.

Even worse, does Mayor Miller plan to make those named Jéan change their names to John? For some reason I can't see this helping Ontario-Québec relations, can you?

On the bright side, it might curb the use of the term "Scarberia"...now if we could only find a way to curb "Scarberia" itself then we'd be set! ;o)

As far as we know, there has not been an official statement made by the Toronto Welsh community. However, several Welsh dissidents are planning to contest the new law in court, citing the law as being discriminatory based on national origin. The trial would normally take 4 days to complete, but it will require 11 days because of people trying to properly pronounce the extraneously long names.

As for the French, their names are protected under the federal Official Languages Act, although I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of renegade teachers tried to convert the Jéans into Johns.
