Unexpected visitors at the door

This morning, I was in the washroom about to take a shower. Then I heard a knock at the door downstairs. "Hmm," I thought to myself, "we're not expecting any deliveries. I really hope it isn't a salesman." I hurriedly put my pyjamas back on and went down to the front door commando-style ( Read more... )

I've found that the only debates that work in an argumentative style are the following:
We are all on the same page, want the same goal. What is the best way to achieve that, given our time and resource limitations?" That these sound like design meetings may not be coincidental.
What I like about religious, metaphysical, ethical discussions is that they are excellent ways to understand another person. The reason why I think they are such poor conversion tools is that they are such rich forums of personal expression on things that are arguably unprovable in our lifetime. I think, with that viewpoint, debates could return to dinner and watercooler conversations where they belong.

Question: Why is the NWT inferior to the NIV, and is there consensus on choice of bible?

I think any translation is going to reflect the translator to a certain degree. To that end, the NIV is quite credible. It was translated by a ecumenical team of scholars, and very carefully reviewed and revised over many years. I don't know anything about the NWT, but if the only group using it are Jehovah's Witnesses, it's credibility is a bit suspect.

Belief in God is not best demonstrated through arguments and debates, but rather through loving one another and setting an example.

I see they've made their rounds to your neighbourhood as well. They really seem to be driving up their recruitment efforts though! They generally seem to appear in pairs, one "senior" and the other "junior". When they approached me last year the junior one actually chuckled when he was telling me about how the Book of Mormon came to be...he probably got into trouble later.

For the sake of brevity and clarity, I've omitted much of the pleasantries and banter that took place

I can only imagine how that went, LOL.

Oh man, knowing our house composition, it'll be pretty funny if a debate takes place on our porch.
