Author's Note: Blame
the_mogget for my lack of posting. We've been RPing like horny rabbits. Also? I'd been cooking this up for a while, but then it appeared in my dream, so I wrote it. PS - You're more likely to get more stories from me if you make it seem like you care and/or give me ideas. LOVE!
Story Index "You have to come," Max had said. "I can't do this without you."
And Jude couldn't refuse. Because he'd been the one who had answered the phone when Max's parents had called, asking how their son was doing. He was the one who had to hear Max's mother cry, saying how proud she was of Max. And he'd been there when Max called them back, and talked to his father. And afterwards, Jude had held Max when he got choked up and emotional - "My dad, Jude. My dad said that I'm a hero, and that he misses me."
"You are a hero," Jude had replied, softly. "You're a hero, and you're my hero."
And that, Jude figured, as he sat on his bed and waited for Max to be done talking to his parents, led to this. Thanksgiving with the Carrigans. Jude had come home for Thanksgiving, and it was by far the most awkward experience of his life. Max was having some private time with his father, Lucy was visiting a friend of hers, and Jude was-- Jude was waiting. He wished he was with Max, holding his hand, but Max's parents didn't even know their son had a boyfriend. Jude felt tense. He and Max had barely any alone time since they'd arrived home - they weren't even sleeping in the same room - and he just wanted to touch Max. Run his fingers through Max's hair, hug him, kiss him, anything. And he couldn't. He could just pace, and hope that Max was alright.
And then there was a knock at the door. "Come in," replied Jude, crossing his fingers.
"Hi," said Max's little sister Julia, cheerfully. "Dinner's ready."
Jude nodded. "I'll be right down." Well... at least he'd be near Max, anyway.
He walked down the stairs and looked around, and immediately spotted Max and his father, sitting in chairs. Mr Carrigan was talking about something, and Max looked distinctly uncomfortable. "Hey," said Jude, placing his hand on Max's shoulder.
Max looked up at him and gave a relieved smile. Jude removed his hand quickly, annoyed at himself. Couldn't let on. He imagined kissing Max right there, right in front of his father, but no, no, he couldn't.
"Shall we sit?" asked Mrs Carrigan, and everyone nodded. They made their way to the dining room table, with the other Carrigan relatives. Jude smiled at Lucy, who was seated across the table a few seats down. He stood at his place next to Max.
"I'll say grace," said Max's father, and everyone took the hands of the people next to them. Max squeezed Jude's hand hard, and Jude squeezed back, closing his eyes. He remembered the times when Max had just woken up from a nightmare and couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't, and Jude would squeeze his hand to assure him that yes, yes, this was real. He glanced over at Max, and saw Max glancing back, but before they could communicate anything else, the prayer was over, and they sat down.
Jude pressed his leg to Max's under the table. "So," asked Max's grandmother. "Why don't you tell us what Vietnam was like?"
Jude's hand, which had been holding a fork, paused in mid air as he gaped at Max's grandmother. "I... umm... I'd rather not," muttered Max.
"Mother, you shouldn't say things like that," scolded Max's mother, softly. Jude placed his hand on Max's thigh comfortingly, and Max placed his hand over Jude's. The dinner continued at least somewhat peacefully for a bit, as everyone ate and mundane conversation was made. Max's mother and Lucy argued about Lucy's involvement with anti-war protesting, and everyone else pretended to care.
"You know," said Max's uncle, to Jude. "You and Lucy would make a pretty cute couple."
"We... umm..." stuttered Jude.
"It didn't work out between us, we tried," replied Lucy. "But thanks."
"Then what are you still doing in America?" asked the uncle.
"I like it here?" responded Jude. "I mean, I like it here. I'm a citizen now."
"You need to find yourself a nice young lady, like I did. So do you, Max," said the uncle, clearly thinking himself wise. "When I was your age, I was already engaged." He smiled at his wife lovingly.
"Excuse me," said Jude, getting up from the table. "I think I need some fresh air." He rose hastily and made his way quickly to the back yard.
Jude stood with his hands in his pockets, looking up at the sky. A moment later, Max stood next to him, and Jude instantly relaxed. Max glanced at him. "You okay?"
Jude turned to him, and cupped Max's face in his hands. "You're the one I should be saying that to." He ran his hands down Max's arms, and then up again, resting them in Max's hair.
Max looked at Jude for a moment, and then lunged forward and kissed him.
"Are you guys--" Lucy stopped. "Sorry to interrupt. I'm good at that, huh?"
Max and Jude broke apart reluctantly. "Sorry," muttered Jude.
"It's fine," replied Lucy. "My god, these people are insufferable. So, the uh, the last time you two were at Thanksgiving dinner, you left that night, but we went bowling first."
Max nodded. "It was great."
"Want to cut out the bowling and just leave?"
Max and Jude nodded excitedly, and practically ran inside to gather their things.
Jude entered Max's room, swinging his bag over his shoulder. He walked over to Max, grabbing the back of his neck. "No," said Max. He kissed Jude quickly, but pulled away. "Let's do that once we get out of here." Jude nodded, reluctantly. They entered the hallway as Lucy was exiting her room, and the three grinned at each other.
Jude shoved his hands in his pockets and looked at the floor while Max and Lucy said their goodbyes to their parents. Mrs Carrigan got teary eyed, and Jude became increasingly frustrated. He slipped outside quietly and leaned against the car.
"Let's go," said Lucy. "Finally."
Max walked over to Jude, and rested their foreheads together. Jude wrapped an arm around him and they stared at each other. Max kissed him quickly again, and then they broke apart. "Yes," he said. "Let's."

Lucy demanded to sit in the front seat, next to Max, "Or else you two will just ignore me." Max agreed that they probably would. Jude lay in the back seat and tried to sleep.
And then he could feel Max's hand running through his hair. He opened his eyes and smiled. "We're home?"
Max nodded. "Yeah."
Jude got up and cracked his neck. He climbed out of the car and stretched out his arms. "Ouch."
Max grinned and rubbed his shoulders. Jude leaned into his hands. "What time is it?"
"Around 1 am."
"Shit," muttered Jude. He embraced Max, resting his head on Max's shoulder.
Max tightened his arms around Jude. "We should go inside."
Jude nodded, but otherwise didn't move. "Are you alright, love? I wanted to ask you that while we were there, but I couldn't."
Max kissed his cheek. "I know. It was-- it was hard. I didn't like it. At least it's over now, we're home."
Jude whispered, "We are," and kissed him on the mouth. He wrapped his arm around Max's waist, Max slung his arm around Jude's shoulder.
"God, I am exhausted," muttered Max as they walked inside.
"We'll sleep... soon," grinned Jude, pulling Max into the apartment and shutting the door tightly behind them.
