My Trip to New York, In a Nutshell

Before I go into details at all I must say that this trip would not have been able to happen without Diana's friend Eric, and his brother Andrew for making such inexpensive flights possible.

I am utterly dumbfounded by the East Coast.  The cities there are designed to actually make sense, there is order and structure that I am simply not used to, ( Read more... )

NYC is my favorite city I've been to so far, although I am biased, having grown up less than an hour from there. The reason it's so well-signed is because the bajillions of tourists would get hopelessly lost otherwise, and the nontourists as well since it's so crowded and big. I lurve it.

Even though its subway system looks like someone ralphed a bunch of colored spaghetti all over paper.

Yeah, but at least it's a moderately efficient subway system. I know there are problems with it, that some rich people make the traditional "not in my backyard" arguments that annoying selfish rich people always make to stop necessary projects from coming about.

But still... it's better than anything I've seen on the West Coast. San Fransisco has a massive population for it's size (being that it's not much bigger than Santa Barbara itself) and it's tourist industry is rather impressive. But as much as I love the Bay Area... it's transit pales in comparison, and the traffic there is almost as bad as L.A.

I've not really been to Seattle, which (from what I've heard) is one of the only cities this side of the Rockies that's made a decent attempt at civic design. But I'd wager it's still probably not that functional in terms of meeting it's populations needs.

It's possible that this is the reason that NY is generally considered one off the only mega-cities in America.
