random perusal of wikipedia entries seems to indicate that people think black panthers are very rare or some sort of hereditary freak occurence and do not appear in the wild at any normal rate. um, forgive me but i grew up in florida and black panthers, or jaguars or leopards [take your pick] are quite common in certain areas and i've see them many ( Read more... )

It's the poor Florida panthers that are practically extinct. Remember they had to bus in a bunch of TX panthers to breed with our pretty kitties? Ugh. Talk about watering down the bloodlines.

In the 80s I can remember friends who lived out in what is now "St. Lucie West" (since you were around there I know you'll know where I mean) butback then wasd lots and lots of acres of vacant wilderness with occasional houses seeing panthers. But, not in years and that area is totally developed now. Also, sometimes down in South FL proper, when you got around that sort of middle-area at the bottom. I would alse see foxes a lot which I hadn't seen in ages either.
