Careers

This list is my own reference point, so a lot of content has been copied-pasted from RF.

Adventure
The first slot opens when a museum is built on the largest lot size available, and placed in the neighbourhood.
The career is unlocked for all Sims once the first Sim in the career reaches the top of the career track.

Architecture
A position opens each time there is a multiple of 10 lots -- residential or community, in any combination.
It is always freely open to any Sim with an Art, Physics, or Mathematics degree.
The career is never unlocked.

Artist
This career is only open to Sims with an Art degree.
The career is never unlocked, but you can have as many Sims in the Artist career as you have Sims with Art degrees.

Athletics
This career is unlocked for all Sims once there is a player-owned sports-themed community lot in place.
The sport in question can be just about anything: Bowling, darts, ice/roller skating, basketball, soccer, mini-golf, swimming. Whatever. There must be equipment available to participate in some sort of sport, though. You can't have just a "sports bar."

Business
A new position in this track opens every time a player-owned business of any kind reaches Rank 5.
It is unlocked to everyone once someone becomes a Business Tycoon, the top of this track.

Criminal*
The first position in this career opens when the population reaches 100.
After that, a slot opens whenever a Sim becomes a Criminal Mastermind, or every 5th burglary.
When a sim becomes a Criminal Mastermind, Law Enforcement and Intelligence also get 1 slot. The career is never unlocked.

Culinary*
For every 1 cafe or restaurant in the 'hood, 1 slot is made available.
The career is unlocked when three separate sims have reached the top of the career.

Dance*
The first position opens when a player-owned dance studio or nightclub reaches Rank 5.
When a sim reaches the top of the career, the career is unlocked for everyone.

Education*
A slot is opened for every 10th child, or for each multiple of 250 in the population. 250, 500, 750, etc.
Regardless of population, it is always open to any Sim with a college degree in any field. The career is never unlocked.

Entertainment
Any Sim who has maxed their Charisma skill may enter this career.
It is never unlocked.

Gamer*
In order for a Sim to enter the Gamer career, they must own a rank 5 arcade, which includes a minimum of four arcade machines.
The career is never unlocked.

Intelligence
A position opens in the Intelligence career whenever a Sim reaches the top of the Military, Criminal, or Science career.
The career is never unlocked.

Journalism*
A position opens each time the population reaches a multiple of 250.
It is never unlocked.

Law
The career is only open to Sims with a degree in Political Science, Business, Economics, or Psychology.
It is never unlocked.

Law Enforcement
This career is never unlocked, but a position opens whenever one of the following happens:
A burglary
Three Sim-started fires
A playable Sim reaches the top of the Criminal career
The population reaches a multiple of 500

Medical*
The first position opens when the population reaches 250. A second opens at 500, a third opens at 1,000, and then a position opens for every multiple of 5,000 thereafter.
The career is always open to Sims with a degree in Biology.
The career is never unlocked.

Military*
Slots open in the military after the population reaches 250. Sims must live in a Barracks until they reach rank 8, 9, or 10. Once sims move onto the Barracks, there must be between 3 and 8 sims in the Barracks at any one time. They may not have a family or spouse.
Sims may move out after they reach rank 8, 9 or 10. They can then have a family/spouse/business/whatever.
If a sim is fired then they are relocated to an empty lot with 1,000 for every rank they achieved.
If a sim is rank 8, 9 or 10 when they lose their job, they are penalised 50% of their worth and must move to a new lot.
There can only be 1 General. If a sim is promoted to General, the older General must quit or retire. They may keep the house.

Music
The career is unlocked when a community lot including a stage and three musical instruments is placed.
This lot does not have to be player-owned.

Natural Science*
Open only to Sims with a golden garden badge, or a degree in Biology or Mathematics.
The career is never unlocked.

Oceanography
Open to any Sim with a gold fishing badge.
The career is never unlocked.

Paranormal*
A slot is open when there is a community cemetery lot with at least two graves in it.
It is open to Sims with a degree in Philosophy, Physics, or Psychology. This career is never unlocked.

Politics
The career is completely unlocked once the population reaches 1,000.
However, there can only be one mayor at a time. If a sim is promoted, the older Mayor must quit or retire.

Science
Any Sim who maxes out their Logic skill and their science hobby enthusiasm before they end their teenager phase may enter the Science career.
The career is always open to Sims with a degree in Biology, Mathematics, or Physics.
The career is never unlocked.

Show Business
The career is open to any Sim with a degree in Political Science, Drama, Economics, or Literature, so long as there is already either a Prestidigitator (top of the Entertainment career) or Professional Party Guest (top of the Slacker career).
The career is never unlocked.

Slacker
A position is opened whenever a "club" community lot is placed.
It is unlocked once the city has a Downtown.

Other Unlockable Things
What follows is a miscellaneous list of things that are unlockable. This list will be added to as I think of more things.

Smart Milk
Smart Milk is only available after a) a sim reaches the top of the Science career, or b) a sim has completed the Xenophillia Challenge.

Private School
Private School is not unlocked until a sim has reached the top of the Education career, AND there is a University.

University
There are two key methods for unlocking a University.

1) A family can donate 500,000 and open a Private University in the family name. Students may only attend if they qualify for 3 scholarships or more.
2) The alternative method is a Public University. To achieve this, every family must contribute 10% of their funds at the end of every week to an ongoing public University fund. A family is expected to pay an additional 5% for every business or community lot that they own. This is done on a weekly basis, with a new university available for every 500,000 raised.

Non-compulsory contributions can be made to the public fund by donating the proceeds from the sale of a community lot, and/or by donating chance card bonuses of up to 50,000.

The initial 500,000 fund only covers 1 dorm and 1 community lot. Additional lots are unlocked at a ratio of 1 graduated sim = 1 lot. Any GPA is acceptable, so long as they complete all their study and pass all the exams. Sims who are expelled do not count.
