Um...

Okay, so apparently I am a Leader (note the capital "L"). I had it pointed out quite clearly today that when there is an activity or project of some sort, I tend to take over. In these type of situations, people tend to just mill around in a highly unproductive manner, so I take over, start organizing, and then (politely and with their input) ( Read more... )

well, the good thing is at the moment you aren't leading a country or anything like that, so you have time to prepare. as for being a good leader; the best way to be a leader in my opinion is to do so without establishing your leadership. you'll find as you work with some groups that there will be others who want to lead right away, and the question is how do you handle it? It's tough because in your situation you are now in graduate school and if im not mistaken you are almost done with it so it means the pressure is on. I guess when in a situation like that never say "I'm the leader" then people get angry and think to themselves "Well, what makes him so wonderful?" Just be there accept ideas and make it seem like everyone has the same amount of input and so long as they all believe they have the power and so long as you make sure that everything is done right and you put in some tasteful criticism now and then everything should be fine. at least that's what i think. then again it is almost five in the morning, so i could be wrong. :

What do ypo look for? anonymous March 6 2008, 15:52:27 UTC
Reverse the question, if someone came to you with the above observation how would you answer them? What do you look for in a leader? Define leader? There is nothing wrong with being a leader as long as you are willing to also serve and set the higher example. Remember today you are third year law student, tommorrow you are first year lawyer (bottom of ladder again) but in your proffession people are expecting a leader not a yes man. OLD GUY

A Leader 3drealist March 6 2008, 20:04:50 UTC
Dad had a good point. Today you are at the top of your game. The one with the most experience. Tomorrow you will be at the bottom of the food chain trying to survive. The thing is, as you grow in your field of work and your experience continues to grow, the leader in you will become stronger. So face it you have what it takes to be a leader. If you want training and courses on it, there are books and seminars out there that can help give you advice in this area. But it really comes down to you and what you want to accomplish, not everyone else around you. If they choose to follow then that probably means you are doing something right.

I wouldn't let this leader thing go to your head. It seems like you have "natural" leadership qualities that surface when you need them. I'm guessing these qualities are stuff like good planning skills, the ability to tell people what to do without sounding like a jerk, and probably not having any reservation about telling somewhat when they aren't picking up the slack? If so, I'd say there really isn't much you need to do.
BTW, what kind of leadership positions would a lawyer find themselves in?
