Nina was actually relatively common for that age in my neck of the woods. (Though that wasn't Ann's neck of the woods, so...who knows?) Eleanor hasn't been common in a while AS Eleanor, but I've known of several Ellie's which are all short for it ( ... )

Cokie is a nickname, because her real name is Marguerite (spelling?)

Hannie is actually a nickname for Hannah, so it's not really too out-there. Her siblings Linny and Sari, however...

Eleanor's actually on the way up again (in the United States at least). In the past twenty years, it's jumped ahead four hundred spots on the SSA's baby names list. Nina's ranked slightly above Eleanor. Among the toddler set, there will be a lot more Eleanors and Ninas than Staceys and Dawns!

Lizwinlove compiled an impressive list of weird names in the series. Bart, Archie, Patsy, Dorianne, and Howie get my votes for being the most ridiculously dated!

Margo is actually a popular name in France, only it's spelled "Margot" or "Margaux".

I've never met anyone named Eleanor, and the only Nina I've ever known is about 50-60 now. Haha.

Yeah, AMM does have a lot of kind of random names... there were a couple of Marjories in the books, though, which I loved because NO one is ever named Marjorie (except me)... although, the two characters named Marjorie were 1) an old lady who was a foster parent in CA, and 2) MA's old babysitter, who was old enough to be a mom. Oh well.

For addictive funtimes (or maybe that's just me?), you can track a name's popularity in the U.S. here. It looks like Eleanor is getting way more popular all of a sudden, WTF? Definitely was not as popular when the BSC books were written. Nina is slowly getting less popular.

. . . and I am getting less popular as I drone on about this. :-p
