Karen's Magic Garden was a favourite LS of mine, and one I used to read rather often. The basis of the story is that Karen, Lisa, Seth and Andrew head to Maine for a family reunion for Lisa's side of the family (and eat a lot of lobster). And this extract from the beginning of chapter 3 always sounded strange to me:

It is so far north that if you ( Read more... )

I swear, Karen's voice in the LS books take out any shock that may have been there.

To be fair, if they ended up off the coast of Nova Scotia and they came from Connecticut, yeah, it'd be really hard to find them. That's over 800 miles.

I think when you're little it comes across as "Wow! Another country!" not "OMG! CANADA?!?! That's place isn't even real!"

No, the distance just means that it would just be really hard for the people who are actually looking for them to find them. Since Nova Scotia is not an uninhabited wilderness, I'm sure that random strangers could find them.

He didn't say "Nova Scotia," he said "off the coast of," which I took to mean one of those many little islands that are uninhabited. McNabs and Lawlor Islands are wilderness preserves, so depending on where they landed they might not be found instantly. St. Paul Island and Oak Island are just empty, though sometimes visited. There are also a bunch of uninhabited islands that are up for sale now for private residences. It's totally possible to hit an island off the coast of Nova Scotia and not find people for a few days, especially if the oldest one is 13. I honestly don't think Martin is so dumb she's never heard of Halifax. I really think she just meant distance combined with "Wow! Another country!"

But look how accurately they represented England in SS15 and that book with Princess Victoria!

On a semi-related note, whenever I read that book, I can't believe Karen doesn't like lobster. I loved lobster tail when I was her age.

I've eaten lobster. For the cost compared to crab, it wasn't so great. If I didn't look at the price, I would have liked it better.

Yeah, if you miss Maine, suddenly you have to make your way across the country on snowshoes, and try to survive bear attacks and bloodthirsty Indians who want to scalp you.

It's tough, living in Canada, I'm telling you.
