Yes, Jessi, of course I Assumed you were White

My first exposure to Sunny was in Dawn's Book from the Portrait collection. Jessi is always going on and on about how "you wouldn't know I was black unless I told you because you would just assume I was white". Well until Dawn actually MENTIONS Sunny's hair color I thought she was black. Especially because of her mom, who seemed like one of those ( Read more... )

As a kid I always thought that the girl with the short & green hair on the cover of Dawn & The We <3 Kids Club was Sunny because it seemed to fit her wild nature.

You made a good point about Jessi! I never really read Jessi books because I didn't find them as interesting as the others but you're right! I never noticed that so thanks lol ;)

Well, if we did, it wouldn't be our fault. After all, AMM (and the ghosties) only point out Jessi's skin color, which means that whoever is writing the book assumes that the reader will imagine that the rest of the BSC is white. Except Claudia.

Yes, of course, there are some hints - eye and hair color, for instance - but we can't take anything for granted anymore, what with hair dye and contacts...

It's funny, because a few days ago I was reading the third book in a series, and up until the main character started going on about this guy's amazing blue eyes, I'd pictured him as black for some reason.

And so what if we did picture her as white? AMM and company always went out of their way to tell us which characters WEREN'T white, so yeah, if nothing was said otherwise, I assumed they were white.

Although weirdly, I always pictured one kid in the LS series as black, and he turned up at the BSC's Kwanzaa celebration.

Omar Harris? I always assumed he was the cute black boy on the over of Karen's School Picture. I never really thought Sarah Ford was the other black girl though, I always thought more curly haired blonde or something, idk!

Yep, him! I think I thought that because when I was young enough to be reading LS, the only person named Omar I'd ever heard of was a kid's game show host named Omar Gooding, and he was black.

...I dunno, that's the only explanation I can think of, beyond coincidence.

I thought Laine was black (I don't know why) until the cover of Stacey's Ex-Best Friend came out, and even then it took a really long time for me to think of her as the white girl on the cover.

Oh, but I always think of California (in the BSC universe) as the land where every single person is white and blonde. Seriously, the idea of Dawn having a black friend in Palo City is, like, mind-blowing. Like it would HAVE to be a fanfic where through some bizarre rift in the space-time continuum California and New Jersey are mashed together in the clouds above Iowa or something.
