Speaking of overthinking the BSC...

Here's something that has always bothered me, though I don't suppose I actually overthink it in the way the previous post regarding houses and incomes does. I want to know why all of the divorced mothers in Stoneybrook still go by "Mrs. Whatever". Especially in the case of ugly divorces like Kristy's and Mrs. Barrett's! When my parents got divorced ( Read more... )

Stacey's mom goes back to her maiden name in one of the Friends Forever books. But, yeah, it seemed odd that ALL OF THEM would keep their married names.

I think it's Spencer? Something like that. My sister has the book right now. It's at the end of Stacey's Problem.

Yeah, I kind of agree, it is weird.

Although when my parents got divorced, my mom kept my dad's last name more out of convenience than anything else. XD

I always thought that was strange!

and that they always called the parents Mr So and So and Mrs Whoever. Basically never by their first names! Even when the parents said they could they never did!
It's understandable for them to call someone they'd only just meant Mrs or Mr but Mary Anne used to called Kristy's mum Mrs. Thomas even though she said she'd been like a second mother to her.
I dunno, I just found it strange!

My mom never changed hers back because it was an eastern european name translated into german which rendered it not only unpronouncable to americans but also made it so americans pronounced it with a curse word at the end.

Stacey's mom changed her name back at the end of the series.

My mom kept my Dad's name until she remarried (around 8 years later?), and my step-mom kept her ex-husband's last name until she married my Dad (move than five years later); in both cases there were two young kids involved. However when my aunt got divorced, she went back to her maiden name, but she had no kids. So I've never thought it to be weird, I just thought that since there were kids, it was common to keep the married name.
