Ooh, I really liked this, seeing the friendship and the drama from Laine's POV. I especially liked the first and last sentences. :)

She just let her best friend go off, thinking that Laine hated her. It was better than being unpopular.

Oh, now that's incisive.

I know we get a little of Laine's remorse for this in canon (don't we, or am I misremembering?), but to have it all set out like this makes it sink in even more. It fleshes out Laine's character.
