The Doctor's been sitting across the room from Neal, staring at everything but the body and not entirely sure if he should hope Peter gets what he's looking for or... not. But he hadn't really expected Neal to wake up after... lying there for so long, and when he rolls onto his side, the Doctor just stares at him for a few seconds before shoving himself to his feet and lunging across the room.

He ends up kneeling beside him, one hand resting lightly on Neal's back. "Welcome back," the Doctor murmurs softly, a slow grin of disbelief spreading over his face. Yes, Neal's still injured, apparently, but he's alive, he's breathing and his heart's beating and that's more than the Doctor really thought possible at this point. "You... probably shouldn't try to get up just yet. Apparently."

Back? He's missing something, something important, but right now he can't get past the fact that Peter should be the one telling him not to move. He coughs, his throat feeling raw. His side is starting to throb as sensation returns, becoming more than the spots where he's touching something or being touched. God, he's tired, weak enough to be shaking, and that's scary.

"Peter," he says, lifting one hand slowly, feeling like he's dragging it through honey, and pressing his palm against his throat. His skin feels slick and sticky. The pressure on his neck feels like he's pressing on a bruise. He tries to say something more but ends up heaving again; it ends in a quiet belch that makes the air smell rancid. Neal flinches back from the smell.

He's slowly clicking things back into place, sorting out the muddle of fear that is his recent time line. The Doctor's all right - what about Peter?

"He's-"

The Doctor winces and breaks off before actually telling Neal what Peter's done, because he's sure Neal can work out the likely consequences of that. Instead, he shifts back a little and offers his hands to help Neal up - back onto the bed, if nothing else.

"He's not here right now. I'm sorry." That apology came out more sincere and much guiltier than he meant it to - but if he's lucky, Neal will be too distracted by just having come back from the dead to notice.

Neal doesn't take the Doctor's hand, just looking up at him with an exhausted half-glare. He's not going to believe it. He refuses to believe it until someone tells him to his face. Peter Burke is dead.

"Where is he?"

Ever since hearing about Neal's death from Peter, Jo hasn't quite been herself. She's lost people before, sure. She's lost her mom, she's lost Ash, she's lost Dean to this place. Hell, she's even lost herself before and managed to come back. But she hasn't ever lost someone like Neal, someone who should have been kept innocent and far away from all the crazy shit that the woods throws at people ( ... )

Neal flinches, holding a hand up automatic and defensive as he sees the gun. He eases himself upright, still laying against the wall for support. The effort involved in this little field trip is making him tired and nauseated and he's pretty sure the gash in his side is leaking fresh blood and fluids onto the crusty strips of cloth that frame it ( ... )

As the figure moves to sit up she can see that it has Neal's face, and the voice that creaks out of him also belongs to Neal. Unsure of how to react to that, she jogs in closer to him, and is instantly taken aback by the smell coming off of him. It's enough to make her stop in her tracks, worry clearly written on her face ( ... )

Peter. Goddamn it. He can't bring himself to look at her any more than he can keep her from touching him and helping him stand. He doesn't trust himself to answer her without breaking down. Peter's not supposed to die. If one of them goes, it's supposed to be Neal. Peter is Peter - the best, implacable and solid as bedrock, the one person who's stood in the way of Neal screwing himself over again. Not because the agent gets anything from it, but just because he cares ( ... )
