Pairing: Kate/Abby
Notes: made for
femslash_landSpoilers: *MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 of NCIS*
It's really only one scene in the episode, and one of the characters is actually dead and just an hallucination. Somehow, despite the circumstances, the scene manages to give us a glimpse of their friendship, every small detail evoking a greater significance.
Kate: You’re a mess, girl. Red eyes, no makeup. If ever there was a time for black lipstick, it’s now.
Kate: Remember when we first met? I couldn’t believe you were a forensic scientist. I thought Goths had bats for pets, or vice versa.
Abby: I really liked you, Kate. A lot.
Kate: Don’t start that again. Where’re your pigtails? I love you in pigtails. That’s better. You were persistent, Abs. First the dark lipstick, then the black nail polish. Next thing you know, I have a tat on my bum. Oh, God. Ducky’s gonna see it! I’m dead, and I’m embarrassed.

We first find Abby transfixed on a drawing of Abby as a vampiric bat, a caricature Kate drew of her. It's obvious that Abby treasures the drawing. The hallucination of Kate interrupts the silence, teasing Abby until she smiles. It seems as if the spirit of Kate continues to watch over Abby, making sure she's okay.
The two women didn't have a huge amount of screen time together, and it was rarely alone or outside of work. Their friendship wasn't as detailed and defined as most, but this last scene between the two of them is the solidification of many hints and jokes over two seasons. We learn that Abby convinced Kate to start wearing black lipstick and nail polish, and that she was in fact, the cause of Kate's tattoo.
Theirs is a friendship of equals, both intelligent, highly skilled women who respect each other. Kate showed that she not only tries to understand Abby, as shown in her drawing, but she's stepping into Abby's world, her behaviour both trusting and playful. In this last scene, we get a glimpse of the immense bond that grew between them, and a chance to imagine how their moments of flirtation might have developed outside of work.
