How, exactly is my questioning the validity of theories selfish?
That's not what seemed selfish to me.
You will probably not be around to see any serious catastrophic changes due to global warming, but you will be around to wonder what happened to all your friends.
This is what seemed selfish. Like I should care more that people are my friends than speaking out strongly against what I think is a life-threateningly foolish public policy. BTW, most of my friends are more in agreement with my opinion than yours on this issue. Still, I'd hate to think you can't be friends with someone who thinks your opinion is foolish.
How robots are now smart enough to do crossword puzzles: http://www.newscientisttech.com/article.ns?id=dn9888&feedId=online-news_rss20 Admittedly, this last one isn't relevant to global warming, but I've included it to demonstrate that even if you are successful in wishing climate change away, the general state of things is frightful enough to justify good old fashioned fear.

After all, your "fool-calling" DID preclude anyone actually reading the article in this instance. Its kinda like not looking where you are going and stepping in shit. If you want to admit to others that you stepped in shit then don't fret when others comment on how it smells. I love the bear trap opinion as an opener. You are damned if you do and damned if you dont. However if you dont, then at least no one knows that you are damned. (except me.)

My friends are used to me being honest with them. Obviously, I don't think J. is a worthless individual at all, but on this issue I think he's being a fool. If he can't live with that I'd be shocked at the thinness of his skin.

There is a global warming taking place. This is rather uncontroversial. The discussion is rather whether we act now - or make priorities elsewhere. As for human responsibility - it is a minor factor (though I personally think we should consider less pollution as it kills us in everyday life and makes life difficult for our allergic children etc) in the global sphere discussion. Max influence we have on the biological sphere in connection with this question is 2%. The discussion is if we should make priorities towards stopping global warming (with tec) or let 'nature' take it's cause as it does with some intevals anyhow and then consider other major problems such as HIV epidemics, removing poverty etc.
