B7's best and worst costumes

My post on the five worst costumes in Blake's 7 got so many comments, I thought I'd do a discussion post on the best and worst for everyone.

My best and worst picks

Blake generally dressed quite well. I like the greens and browns and the general Robin Hood look. I even like the big sleeves and the goose-turd green because they're iconic.

Best: The Robin Hood with patterned sleeves. Not an easy one to get a cap of, but it's very flattering on him.

Worst: The spacesuit. As a bonus, this scene won my award for worst special effect in an SF series and it was so unnecessary! They could have just cut to the interior of the building he was approaching.

Vila suited the warm colours of S1 and S2; the grey of S4 did nothing for him. He looks wonderful in black; pity he hardly wore it.

Best: The brown suit with cream trim. To me it's the definitive Vila outfit.

Worst: The crossing guard. (If you don't count the cockroach cloaks in Killer.

Jenna usually had quite nice outfits, though I query the practicality of stilettos, long gowns, and floating chiffon on the flight deck of what amounts to a battleship.

Best: Her wine and grey jumpsuit. Smart and practical, and it looks great on her.

Worst: The pastel petal thing. Pastels don't really suit her and I don't like the gathers into clips at her waist.

Avon was the one the designers had the most fun with, and his costumes have the most nicknames (the Silver Alpha. the Red Lobster, the Demented Dentist...).

Best: Panelled jacket. It's a nice fit and very flattering on him.

Worst: The Toreador, though it's a tough contest what with the House Painter and the Stretched Braces

Gan's later costumes were better; he had a size and dignity that could carry them off. Not many can look good on a cloak.

Best: The trimmed jerkin Robin Hood-type outfit The cloak's magnificent but this is more practical for a rebel.

Worst: His first. It's just shapeless and blah.

Cally got some great outfits--hey, I like the red combat fatigues and the leopards-kin coat--and some not so good.

Best: Her Killer outfit. You hardly see her in the episode, and the screencap doesn't show it properly, but it was a long tunic over slim trousers; very elegant.

Worst: I'd go for the Science Fiction Shoulders but the Limp White Dress with floaty back has to take the prize.

Dayna is such a beautiful woman, but they didn't seem to know how to dress her to her best advantage.

Best: The green draped dress. It's elegant and a lovely colour.

Worst: The Gathered Crotch. I believe it's as awful from behind, and the the blue bra almost lost containment at some point. And it's not the only gathered crotch either!

Tarrant gets some nice costumes (a fourth reason to dislike him?) and no wonder; he's got the figure for them.

Best: The brown Prince Charming.

Worst: The Kairopants! What Avon and Vila are wearing there must come pretty low on their lists too. Lucky it's an episode I loathe.

Soolin was ill-served by being only in S4 when everyone but Avon wore Dorian grey.

Best: The trimmed catsuit; very smart.

Worst: the loose Scorpio Overalls.

Servalan looked wonderful in white. They should have stuck to it because the red didn't suit her as much, and the harsher makeup and black dresses of Sleer made her look a lot older.

Best: Hard choice, but Buttoned suit with hat: so elegant! The dress with the draped collar is a close runner-up.

Worst: Dayna's purple dress: a horrible style and colour on her.

Travis (both of him) looked great in his black leather uniforms.

Best: The outfit from Gambit; very dashing.

Worst: The mummy with eyeball accessory. Enough said.

What do you think?

vila, gan, avon, cally, jenna, tarrant, soolin, blake, travis, dayna, servalan
