What kind of Terry are you reading?

So, I've been out of town for the past week and am horribly behind on catching up with the flist, but you know that's half the fun sometimes. ;) While on vacation, I finished the book I'd brought with me sooner than expected, and picked up a second book at the airport.

Someone MSTed Wheel of Time? ZOMG LINK PLZ.

[Not to nitpick, but it's Paolini, btw. Paloni sounds like salami. Made of ponies. :D]

Gregory Maguire is amazing! Unfortunately my uni library doesn't seem to have heard of him, and I really want to read Son Of A Witch :(. I might have to take really drastic action and buy the thing.

I read Goodkind's first book years ago. About the first 3/4 of it was competently written if unspectacular fantasy. Then the MC got captured and tortured for a few hundred pages, before returning to our story, already in progress.

I couldn't figure out whether Goodkind had decided "oh, crap, I don't know what happens next -- I guess I'll just torture this guy until I figure it out" or whether he wrote that part one-handed.

My best friend, who loves the series, says that the torture is important because of psychological blah blah blah having to break him in order to re-create him. Except he broke under torture, he snapped back awful quick after teh healing sexxors with the woman who tortured him in the first place.

Or something. It must have been at least 5 years since I read it. *shrug*

Yeah, I gave up reading Goodkind's books at about that point. Mainly the books just stopped being interesting to me.
